Moisture wicking: the easy way to a comfortable run

Exercise is sweaty work: we all know it, and some of us recognise this better than others! But moisture causes friction and friction causes discomfort. For triathlon competitors in particular, finding a way to reduce the amount of moisture, whether it be from perspiration or from transitioning from a swim to a cycle, is key to performing at your best.

What is 'wicking'?

Moisture wicking fabrics are a simple way to reduce the friction caused by moisture during any sporting activity. Polypropylene fabric, such as those used in the Carbon Energized base layer range, transfers sweat and any other moisture away from the skin, as it allows liquids to flow through its porous surface. Essentially, moisture wicking fabrics are breathable.

How does moisture wicking benefit athletes?

Long distance athletes, such as marathon runners and triathletes, can certainly benefit from gear which utilises moisture wicking technology. Over time, the friction caused by moisture can cause pain and sores, but with wicking material this does not happen. In addition, running a long distance in breathable base layer clothing can help to keep your body at a more comfortable running temperature, and rid you of that sticky, dripping discomfort of being overly sweaty.

Triathletes in particular could benefit from moisture wicking running trainers which allow for a smoother and more comfortable transition when you are wet from swimming. Specific triathlon running shoes will always use moisture wicking fabric to protect your feet from friction burns and blisters by reducing the build-up of moisture.

Trail running shoes are also much improved by wicking material, especially if you are running cross-country through rivers, puddles and streams.

The extra benefits

Besides being a more comfortable material to use during sporting events, wicking clothing can also help prevent bacterial and fungal growth, protecting your feet from the long-term issues that can arise from long-distance competitions. They can also help to prevent hypothermia and other cold-induced ailments, making wicking fabric perfect for winter training.

Moisture wicking clothing allows for increased comfort, which equals a better performance, whatever sporting or outdoor activity you are taking part in. Investment in good quality wicking gear could mean the difference between entering a race, and really competing at your best.
